Google Photos is a service that lets people share and store photos. It was announced in May 2015 and grew out of Google+, which was the company’s social network before it was split off. As of June 1, 2021, any new photos and videos uploaded to the accessible version of Google Photos will count toward the user’s 15 GB free storage limit, which is shared across all of the user’s Google services except for Pixel phones.
The free plan that lets you take unlimited photos and videos up to 16 megapixels and 1080p resolution (anything more significant gets shrunk down to these sizes) also ended on the same day. The service automatically looks at pictures and figures out what they are about. The service lets users search for anything in photos and returns results from three main categories: People, Places, and Things.
Google Photos’ computer vision can recognize both human and animal faces and group them. This feature is only available in some countries due to privacy laws. It can also acknowledge geographic landmarks (like the Eiffel Tower) and subjects, such as birthdays, buildings, animals, food, and more.
Using different kinds of machine learning, the Photos service can recognize the content of photos, create albums automatically, turn similar images into quick animated videos, bring up memories from the past at essential times, and improve the quality of pictures and videos.
In May 2017, Google announced updates to Google Photos, such as reminders and suggestions for sharing photos, shared photo libraries between two users, and physical albums. Pictures automatically suggested collections based on a person’s face, a place, a trip, or something else that made them unique.
Critics praised Google Photos after it was separated from Google+ in 2015. The updated Photos service’s recognition technology, search, apps, and loading times were all praised by reviewers. Still, privacy concerns were brought up, such as why Google built the service, how it works with governments, and whether or not there are laws that could force Google to hand over a user’s entire photo history.
A lot of people use Google Photos. It had 100 million users after five months, 200 million after one year, 500 million after two years, and 1 billion after four years
